THE CHALLENGE

About Northwest Community Healthcare

Northwest Community Healthcare serves the northwest Chicago suburbs as a comprehensive community hospital system. With specialized service lines across surgery, cardiology, cancer care, and maternal health, NCH needed consistent video content to promote their physicians, highlight successful patient outcomes, and communicate their capabilities to the community.

The challenge: Build trust through storytelling. Prospective patients need to see the faces behind the care, physicians explaining procedures, patients sharing recovery stories, and facilities demonstrating capabilities. During COVID, that challenge intensified when physical visits became impossible.

What They Needed:

Physician profiles: Introduce doctors across specialties—vascular surgery, cardiology, orthopedics—helping patients choose providers with confidence
Patient stories: Document real recovery journeys to build emotional connection and social proof
Service line videos: Explain complex medical services (cancer screening, colorectal health) in accessible language
PSAs: Public health messaging (lung cancer screening, colon cancer prevention, prostate health)
Event documentation: Capture community health events and internal celebrations
COVID adaptation: When families couldn't visit the NICU in person, create virtual tours so expecting parents could see the facility remotely

THE APPROACH

Building Visual Consistency Across Service Lines

Over 3 years, I embedded with NCH's marketing team to document their physicians, patients, and facilities. The production approach mirrored the work at Loyola Medicine: interviews first to capture authentic storytelling, followed by B-roll of physicians working with patients, facility tours, and treatment demonstrations.

Interview Strategy:

  • Pre-interview research on each physician's specialty and patient population
  • Questions designed to elicit conversational, non-technical explanations
  • Multiple takes to ensure physicians felt comfortable on camera
  • Editing for natural pacing (removing medical jargon, tightening explanations)

Patient Stories:

  • Coordinated with hospital staff to identify patients willing to share recovery stories
  • Filmed in hospital settings and patient homes for authenticity
  • Balanced emotional impact with medical accuracy
  • Protected patient privacy while showing real outcomes

COVID Innovation: NICU Virtual Visit

When COVID restrictions prevented expecting parents from touring the NICU before delivery, I created a comprehensive virtual experience:

  • Standard video walkthrough showing the NICU layout, equipment, and care approach
  • 360° video allowing viewers to explore the space immersively
  • Narration from NICU staff explaining what parents should expect

This became a critical tool for reducing anxiety during an already stressful time and offered parents the option to "visit" the NICU from home before their baby's arrival.

WHAT THIS PROVES

Healthcare Storytelling That Builds Trust

Physician-Focused Content:

Doctors aren't actors. Directing physicians to speak naturally on camera requires patience, pre-interview research, and editing that removes medical jargon while preserving expertise.

Patient Story Sensitivity:

Healthcare storytelling requires balancing emotional impact with patient privacy, coordinating with hospital staff, and ensuring medical accuracy.

COVID Adaptation:

When restrictions changed how healthcare operated, production adapted. The NICU virtual tour wasn't just a workaround—it became a permanent tool for reducing parental anxiety.

Event Documentation Without Disruption:

Capturing community health events requires documenting authentic moments without interfering with patient care or staff workflow.

Consistency Across Service Lines:

Whether filming a vascular surgeon, a cancer survivor, or a public health PSA, every video maintained NCH's brand voice: accessible, compassionate, community-focused.
