GSK is a global pharmaceutical and healthcare company with presence at the world's most competitive medical conferences. At ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology), GSK needed to establish thought leadership, document their booth presence, and create social content, all while surrounded by competitors.

The challenge: produce polished, on-brand video content in real time, in a visually chaotic environment where showing a competitor's logo could be a compliance nightmare.

the CHALLENGE

Document a Major Conference Without Showing a Single Competitor

GSK needed video content from their ASCO booth at McCormick Place in Chicago: on-site interviews with portable teleprompter, B-roll of booth activities, and social-ready edits. The catch: the conference floor is packed with competitor banners, signage, and booths. Every shot had to be meticulously framed to avoid showing rival pharmaceutical brands.

What was at stake:

  • Brand presence: GSK needed to compete with pharma giants for social media visibility during ASCO
  • Thought leadership: Interviews needed to feel professional, not rushed conference-floor content
  • Compliance risk: Showing competitor signage could create legal/compliance issues
  • Speed: Same-day turnaround meant no room for reshoots or extensive post-production fixes

The workflow challenge: Film half the day, edit the other half, while the conference is still happening.

the APPROACH

Year 1: Solo Shooter/Editor Model (2024)

Pre-Production: Before the conference floor opened, I scouted McCormick Place to understand sight lines, competitor booth locations, and safe shooting angles. I consulted with the GSK team to identify which areas were off-limits visually.

Production (3 Days, 2 Videos/Day):

  • Filmed on-site interviews using a portable teleprompter
  • Captured B-roll of booth activities, product displays, attendee interactions
  • Used tight framing and specific lens choices to isolate GSK content from competitor signage
  • Shot in the morning, edited in the afternoon
  • Delivered videos same-day for next-morning social media posts

Year 2: Dedicated Camera Operator Model (2025)

GSK brought me back for ASCO 2025 with a refined workflow:

  • Hired a dedicated camera operator to handle all shooting
  • I focused exclusively on editing for faster turnaround
  • Added studio interviews for more controlled environments (vs. noisy conference floor)
  • Same output: 2 videos/day over 3 days

Why the change worked: Splitting shooting and editing roles allowed tighter turnarounds and higher-quality post-production while maintaining same-day delivery.

Year 1 + Year 2:

  • 12 total videos across 2 conferences
  • Mix of on-site interviews (portable teleprompter) and B-roll
  • Same-day edits delivered for immediate social media use
  • Competitor-free framing maintained in all footage
